NORTH BAY – Hot off the success of the 2018 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, North Bay is now set to be the centre of another global display of athletic prowess as it hosts the upcoming 2019 Costco’s Generic Brand “Kirkland Signature” Ibuprofen World Icy Sidewalk Breakdancing Championship.
“Preparation for the event is in full swing here in North Bay,” exclaims North Bay City Mayor Al McDonald. “With the recent weather, the only thing we really have to do is just not maintain the sidewalks. The freezing rain is doing the rest.
“If weather conditions get ‘better’ in the next week or so, then yeah, we’ll need to flood some of the sidewalks to get a good layer of ice, but we believe that nature won’t let us down.”
City’s Sole Competitor
The North Bay Bay sat down to speak with the city’s own Branden Turcotte to pick his brain about the sport.
“Icy Sidewalk Breakdancing is the real sport of Canada,’ says Turcotte. “It was started on the sidewalks of Winnipeg. People were slipping on ice right left and centre. Then someone was like ‘hold on, what’s going on here?’ and started noticing some art to it.”
“It was a sport that kids without any money could participate in, so it caught on fast. I discovered it when there was an exhibition event in Sudbury and I was hooked. I asked City Hall to bid on being hosts, and I’m so happy to say that now North Bay is the proud host of the 2019 Costco’s Generic Brand “Kirkland Signature” Ibuprofen World Icy Sidewalk Breakdancing Championship!”
Turcotte will be North Bay’s representative and sole competitor at the games. When asked about his game plan Turcotte was tight-lipped.
“I can’t tell you too much, but I can tell you this; I will make North Bay proud, and I will be walking away with the 2019 Costco’s Generic Brand “Kirkland Signature” Ibuprofen World Icy Sidewalk Breakdancing Championship Golden Timmies Cup. Legend has it if you roll up the rim, you get lifetime free coffee. I mean, I’m more of a McCafe person, but, like, it’s nice to have.”
Event Details
Opening Ceremony and main tournament events will happen just outside of downtown at the corner of Main, Algonquin and Fraser – in front of Mr. Pancho, with sideshows and exhibition events taking place on sidewalks in the downtown core.
